The Control Room

The Room

The actual space in Bernardsville. What the diagram calls "Deluxe Reverb → SM7B → Volt ch 5" lives here, on the floor by the piano bench, under a warm lamp.

The room, from the doorway

Wide view of the studio — GC1 baby grand on the right, the keys corner and desk on the left, the Deluxe Reverb on the floor, orange curtains in the alcove, GIK SlatFusors in the corners

Deluxe Reverb on the floor in front of the piano — the standing amp position. GIK SlatFusor corner traps left and right; the alcove curtain behind the Model D and keyboard stand tames the flutter behind the players. Warm lamps only — no overheads while tracking.

Tracking

Dan at the piano, singing into a mic with the Prophet-5 and Model D visible on stands behind

The GC1 open on the full stick, the M201 pair in over the strings, an SM7B on a boom for a scratch vocal. The Model D and Prophet stack sits at arm's reach for overdubs without leaving the bench.

Piano + amp corner

Closer view of the GC1 with the Deluxe Reverb in the foreground and a GIK bass trap on the wall behind

The Deluxe Reverb's mic position lives on the floor beside the piano bench. The FlexRange bass trap on the wall behind ties down the corner where the low end used to pile up.

Songwriter's desk

Music stand on the GC1 with a lyric sheet and a songwriter's notebook, mics in place over the strings

The everyday view from the bench — lyric sheet clipped up, the SlatFusor visible over the shoulder, mics parked in position so the room is always tracking-ready.

The desk

Mixing desk with the monitor, Mac Mini, KH 80 DSP pair, AudioFuse X8IN and Volt 876 on the rack shelf

Neumann KH 80 DSPs on isolation stands, Mac Mini between them, the AudioFuse X8IN sitting on top of the Volt 876 on the rack shelf. Slat wall behind the monitors doubles as diffusion. GIK panel above the display kills the first reflection off the ceiling.
